Book spine poem: Secret Place

Here’s a new book spine poem (aka bookmash). For the uninitiated: This is a game where you make a visual poem from the spines of books on your shelf.

Secret Place

Wild flowers, the wild places,
The birds of the innocent wood –
The secret place on the black hill,
Half a life still life,
The living mountain
Changing my mind.

Thank you to the authors: Richard Fitter, Robert Macfarlane, Deirdre Madden, Tana French, Bruce Chatwin, V.S. Naipaul, A.S. Byatt, Nan Shepherd, and Zadie Smith; and to Nina Katchadourian. (Links point to earlier posts featuring the authors, including more book spine poems.)

For more, dozens more, see the bookmash archive. Or make your own!

  1. You’ve done it again. Simple yet profound. Love it!
